TATER PEOPLE Some people never seem motivated to participate, but are just content to watch while others do the work. They are called "Speck Taters". Some people never do anything to help, but are gifted at finding fault with the way others do the work. They are called "Comment Taters". Some people are very bossy and like to tell others what to do, but don't want to soil their own hands. They are called "Dick Taters". Some people are always looking to cause problems by asking others to agree with them. It is too hot or too cold, too sour or too sweet. Theyare called "Agie Taters". There are those who say they will help, but somehow just never get around to actually doing the promised help. They are called "Hezzie Taters". Some people can put up a front and pretendto be someone they are not. They are called "Emma Taters". Thenthere are those who love others and do what they say they will. They are always prepared to stop whatever they are doing and lend a helping hand. They bring real sunshine into the lives of others. They are called "Sweetp'Taters", that's you. If you know any "Sweet p'Taters", send them this!! Dorothy E. Tissair, M.L.S. The original Getting Online, released in September 1999, used plain English to demonstrate the power, organization and tools of the Internet. NCSC's new Getting Online will move small communities further along the technology path by offering detailed guidance on: - Launching e-government (to provide services, promote democracy); - Encouraging public access and use (via schools, libraries, public places); - Putting local non-profits online (to build community, encourage civic action, raise funds); - Fostering e-commerce among local businesses; - Furnishing high-speed telecommunications services (DSL, cable, wireless; municipal telecom role); - Engaging youth as technology champions; ... and much more. The new guide will also incorporate current data on telecom usage and updated URLs, etc. It will be published in fall 2002. At least 10,000 guidebooks will be distributed to small and rural communities nationwide through public agencies, regional development NCSC is seeking brief (1-page, 500 words max.) small community (less than 10,000 pop.) case studies to incorporate into the new Getting Online. The brief case studies should be organized around the following topics: - Problem Experienced; - Strategy Applied; - Results Achieved; - Contact Person for Additional Information. If you are interested in preparing a case study, please contact Nancy Stark, NCSC's Director of Community and Economic Development, [EMAIL PROTECTED] All case studies must be submitted (electronically) by June 10.
