Hello,
I came across an article called "Tangled Web for Kids" in our local
paper and found it at the following:
http://www.cincinnati.com/technology/

I thought it gave some good advice regarding how much supervision/freedom
you should allow a child on the internet. It is broken down into various age
groups
from 7-9 and ending with 16-18.

1. Community Classes

Community Classes are year-round, so you can continue until you reach your
goals. Learners who want to enter a community class will first attend an
orientation with a Recruiter who will match you with a class. If desired,
you can be referred to an Area Coordinator who will match you with a
Tutor.
Community Classes have no start or end date, and learners can choose from
General Education Development (GED), Pre-GED, and Adult Basic Education
(ABE). To enroll, call CFL at 215-474-1235 to find out when the next
orientation will be held.

3. Family Literacy

The Family Literacy Program is a family-focused approach, targeting
parents and children with intensive, regular, and long-term education and
family support services. The program was created to get parents involved
in their children's learning by helping them in their own learning. CFL's
Family Literacy Program has many classes in Phiiladelphia public schools
and includes Even Start and Head Start.
The purpose of each program is to help learners obtain their parenting and
personal goals. Students can improve their reading, writing and/or math
skills to assist their children with homework, learn about child
development and work on getting their GED. To enroll in Even Start,
contact 215-351-7231. For other Family Literacy Programs, call the Center
for Literacy at 215-474-1235.

4. Volunteer Tutoring Program

Our 300 volunteer tutors are available for one-on-one and small group
sessions. Area Coordinators match students and tutors by personality,
schedule, learner goals, subject the learner wants to learn, and tutor's
interest. The tutor and learner meet once or twice per week based on their
goals and availability. To be matched with a tutor, call CFL at
215-474-1235.

Last updated: May 27, 2002

5. Education for Work

Education for Work was created to improve learners' reading, writing and
math skills so they can enter a job-training program and to help learners
make career choices. The open enrollment classes have up to twelve weeks
of basic skills training which leads to skills training in the following
areas:
Clerical, Certified Nursing Assistant, Customer Service Representative,
Medical Billing, Food Services and others. Learners will attend weekly
like skills workshops. For more information on Education for Work, call
215-726-6210.

The Education for Work Program is a partnership with the Philadelphia
Workforce Development Corporation.

Last updated: June 02, 2002

6. Workplace Essential Skills/Literacy Link

Workplace Essential Skills is a self-directed program where learners work
on reading, writing, math communication and employment skills via video,
Internet and workbook activities. Learners make their own plan and set the
pace. They work independently on computers. For more information call
215-474-1235, x301.

Last updated: June 02, 2002

7. Workforce Literacy

The Center for Literacy can set up GED, ESL, writing, customer service or
other classes at your workplace. For more information, call 215-474-1235.

Last updated: June 02, 2002

8. Philadelphia Adult Diploma

The Philadelphia Adult Diploma Program gives a Philadelphia School
District High School Diploma to adult learners who successfully complete a
series of tasks. These tasks are accomplished at their own pace through
experiences that put learners in touch with community, cultural and
educational resources. Learners will be given tasks in selected subject
areas to show they have mastered certain skills.
Learners must complete an assessment, interview and orientation to be
accepted into the program. Learners work independently, tracking their
progress with a portforlio, and participate in monthly meetings with an
assessor to review their progress. There is no limit. Once work is
approved, the learner's name is sent to the school district so the learner
can receive a diploma from the school district in June. For more
information on The Adult Diploma Program call 215-351-1670.
