This session is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Pacific), Wednesday, June 12, in TAPPED IN (http://www.tappedin.org) National History Day (NHD) is a highly regarded yearlong academic program for elementary and secondary schools. The program makes history every day by providing young Americans an appreciation of their heritage and teaching them essential skills that will help them succeed in college and the workplace. Through the program students in grades six through twelve conduct extensive historical research, analyze and interpret their materials, and present their findings in historical papers, museum-style exhibits, dramatic performances and multimedia documentaries for evaluation by professional historians and educators. NHD has received the Charles Frankel Prize for public programming from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and is highlighted in the Presidential Committee on Arts and Humanities report, "Creative America." The program offers a model, and the means, for history education reform. To help teachers enhance classroom history teaching and student learning, NHD offers professional opportunities that provide them with the latest in historical scholarship and innovative teaching methods. NHD conducts summer teacher institutes, sponsors workshops and conferences, and publishes curricular materials that focus on upcoming NHD themes and methods for bringing history to life in the classroom. Any social studies teacher (or interested educator) is invited and encouraged to attend this session. As always, TAPPED IN help desk personnel will be on hand to assist new users. It's suggested that those new to TAPPED IN log in approximately 10 minutes prior to the session in order to be assisted to the forum location. TAPPED IN is easy-to-use, and works well in either a Windows or Macintosh environment. Persons with questions about the forum or wishing more information are invited to e-mail Michael Hutchison offlist.
