Science New at YES I Can! Science, http://www.yesican.yorku.ca The YES I Can! Science Project, hosted by the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science of York University, Toronto has just launched a series of online professional development courses for K-12 Science teachers. The courses are self-paced and designed to enable participants to log on and off and arrange their schedules to suit their work and other commitments. Registration for all courses is ongoing on a continuous intake model. There are no prescribed course dates; participants may register at any time and start and finish courses at their convenience. All courses are approved and accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers. They comply with the Professional Learning Program standards set by the College and are available online to Ontario teachers either in Ontario or abroad. These courses are also available to teachers in other countries wishing to expand their current knowledge and experience in curriculum, teaching strategies or use of technology. Registration has already opened for the following courses. Canadians in Space ------------------ This fourteen hour course for K-12 teachers promotes Canadian achievements in space, providing teachers with resources to teach basic science concepts in a variety of space-specific contexts, such as: a mission to Mars, building an orbiting laboratory, monitoring radiation from space, using satellite technology to monitor species migration and habitat changes, living and working in extreme environments and using robotics to move payloads in space. Mars: Living and Working in a Closed Environment ------------------------------------------------ This fourteen hour course for Kindergarten to Grade 6 teachers is based on the theme of a manned mission to Mars. Teachers will be provided with an extensive set of resources and strategies to teach basic science concepts from the Earth and Space Science strand in grades K-6 in a context that fosters the understanding of connections among science, technology, society, the environment and the exploration of space. YES I Can! Science ------------------ This twelve hour course consists of three modules focussing on the use of the YES I Can! Science database. Course participants will have opportunities to explore and use all features of the database: curriculum browsing and searching; class management/curriculum tracking; resources browsing and searching; and rating resources. Participants will be required to choose and evaluate resources for use in their own classrooms. Registration for other courses will be opening over the coming weeks: -Engaging in Real Science -Ozone and Greenhouse Gases: Understanding the Impact of Environmental Change for Canadians -Radiation: It's Been Around Forever! -Robotics: How Canadians Will Help Explore the Red Planet -Walkerton: Combating Fear With Knowledge Visit YES I Can! According to researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles, the gap between those with Internet access and those without is closing when measured by the degree of education computer users have attained. A government report showed the gap between urban and rural users disappearing. A third report from the Pew Research Center indicated that the gap between whites and African Americans is narrowing. Based on analysis like this, the Bush administration has proposed elimination of two key programs from the fiscal year 2003 budget. However, groups trying to save the government programs argue that the digital divide is not disappearing, it is changing. Norris Dickard, a senior associate at the Benton Foundation, points out one new divide that emerging between those with high-speed Internet access and those with slower dial-up access. Jeffrey Cole, head of the UCLA study, believes that access issues may be getting better, but that there is significant divide in how people use the Internet and what their Internet skills are. It visits sites on the Statue of Liberty, the American flag, Ellis Island, American Indians, bald eagles and more. It's a fun collection of things American. See it at: http://www.field-trips.org/ss/america/ and then click Start Field Trip. Also, last month I mentioned our featured trip, "Windows on the World". What I failed to mention is this: If you are pursuing any foreign travel this summer, the trip visits some great sites including, The Consumer Information Center, The Embassies of Washington, D.C., the U.S. Consulate, a Currency Converter, translator, Center for Disease Control and Prevention....basically some sites packed with very useful info. Many of the sites are U.S. based, but there are also sites on times zones, and world weather that is really not dependent on where you are.
