Tisha B'Av is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar
because of the incredible series of tragedies which
occurred on that date throughout Jewish History.
The tragic events include the destruction of the
first and second temples in Jerusalem.

There are 33 educational links about the 9th of Av on
my Jewish hotsites at:

May this mournful period turn into a joyous one in the
near future.

The Office for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has an impressive collection of
Java lessons and curriculum resources for learning about these topics. The
office was established "to serve as a model-builder for innovative,
standards-based, technology-intensive mathematics and science instruction at
the K-16 levels." Most of the lessons focus on geometry, statistics, or
algebra; but there are also some that cover science concepts. The activities
cover a wide range of subject matter, but they can be tedious to browse
because there are no suggested grade levels

June 19, 2002 | Only a few questions can be called basic to the human
condition -- such as "What can we eat?" or "Who created us?" -- and lots of
very smart people have been working on them for millennia. The "eating" thing,
for instance, has been minutely parsed by agriculture, economics and the
culinary arts (among other fields), while the question of origins has given us
religion and several branches of the hard sciences. But there's at least one
question -- as basic as any other in its topical relevance and its grounding in
the ancient -- that human inquiry has only recently begun seriously to address.
It was asked in caves, by people clad in mastodon-hide shifts, and chances are
it crossed your mind this very day. "How," it goes, "can people be so stupid?"
And who knows the answer, really? I don't -- do you?

One need not look far to find breathtaking acts of stupidity committed by
people who are smart, or even brilliant. The behavior of smart
individuals--from presidents to prosecutors to professors--is at times so
amazingly stupid as to seem inexplicable. Why do otherwise intelligent people
think and behave in ways so stupid that they sometimes destroy their
livelihoods or even their lives?

This book is the first devoted to investigating what the most current
psychological research can tell us about stupidity in everyday life. The
contributors to the volume, renowned scholars in various areas of human
intelligence, present fascinating examples of people messing up their lives,
and they offer insights into the reasons for such behavior. From a variety of
perspectives, the contributors discuss

The nature and theory of stupidity

How stupidity contributes to stupid behavior

Whether stupidity is measurable

While many millions of dollars are spent each year on intelligence research and
testing to determine who has the ability to succeed, next to nothing is spent
to determine who will make use of their intelligence and not squander it by
behaving stupidly. Why Smart People Can Be So Stupid focuses on the neglected
side of this discussion, reviewing the full range of theory and research on
stupid behavior and analyzing what it tells us about how people can avoid
stupidity and its devastating consequences.

Robert J. Sternberg is IBM Professor of Psychology and Education, and director
of PACE, the Center for the Psychology of Abilities, Competencies, and
Expertise at Yale University. He is the author or editor of some sixty books
and a widely known expert on intelligence testing.

Why do intelligent people sometimes behave in ways so stupid that they destroy
their livelihoods or even their lives? This book is the first to investigate
the psychological basis for stupidity in everyday life. Experts shed light on
the nature and theory of stupidity, whether stupidity is measurable, how people
can avoid stupidity and its devastating consequences, and much more.

This original book gathers together the best thinking and research on what
causes smart people to do foolish things. A highly original work with an
exceptional list of contributors.--Martin Ford, Graduate School of Education,
George Mason University

Why Smart People Can Be So Stupid offers serious answers to a neglected
conundrum, one with ramifications for understanding the very nature of
intelligence itself. As always, Robert Sternberg takes on important issues in a
creative way, and has gathered a strong band of contributors, each of whom
offers an insightful analysis. A rewarding read.--Daniel Goleman, Ph.D.,
author of Emotional Intelligence

One way to generate interesting, new research ideas in science is to take an
old idea and turn it on its head (as Yale social psychologist, William McGuire
once said, the opposite of a great truth is also a great truth). In this
volume, Bob Sternberg and the experts he has assembled attempt to understand
the psychological basis of narrow models of intelligence. Foolishness runs
rampant--from the schoolroom to the boardroom to the bedroom--in part because
we are afforded insufficient practice to hone our practical, emotional, and
social competencies, what Jack Mayer and I like to call our hot intelligences.
By revealing the many ways in which smart people behave
maladaptively and the social conditions that give rise to such bungling, the
contributors to this volume stimulate new directions for theory, research, and
practice with respect to human intelligence.--Peter Salovey, Chris Argyris
Professor and Chair of Psychology, Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health,
Yale University

This book's intent is something that academia needs. Intelligence may be
something of a cult, but stupidity only receives cursory treatment. . . .
Precisely because the state of being dumb has no analogue to being smart,
Why Smart People Can Be So Stupid provides valuable insight into a subject that
eludes, but intrigues as well.--James A. Crawford, The Harvard Crimson

"A growing number of HIV infections in industrialized countries are

HIV. One-third of new U.S. cases are among women -- the majority among
black and Hispanic women -- and intravenous drug use now accounts for 30
percent of all infections in the country. "

summer has seen the most destructive wildfires in Colorado
and Arizona history, consuming acres by the hundreds of thousands.

But have you ever considered who the men and women that battle these fires
are, what keeps them motivated against such formidable foes and why they
respond to the Fire Call?

Log onto NationalGeographic.com’s Fire Call as Idaho wildland

IMSA's 21st Century Information Fluency Program

The Online Learning department at the Illinois Mathematics and Science
Academy has announced new program offerings and professional
development opportunities for the 2002-3 year. Details are available
at http://wizard.imsa.edu/learn.

The 21st Century Information Fluency Program is now inviting
participation from librarians in Illinois middle and high schools.
The librarians will form the core of a school based team (along with a
teacher and administrative leadership) that will receive access to the
comprehensive Information Fluency Toolkit. They will also be trained
to locate, evaluate, and integrate 21st century information resources
across the curriculum and to mentor teachers to integrate 21st century
information fluency into classroom learning experiences. Year one of
this grant will work with 100 schools and scale up in following years.

This program is underwritten in part by the US Department of Education
and will be offered free of charge to participants and their
districts. Inquiries may be directed to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Persons attending at least three hours of events during the Summer
Carnival will be eligible to receive a Certificate of Participation,
which they may place in their professional development portfolios.

(Check with your school district to see if this certificate will be
recognized as Continuing Education Units.) You can also get one hour of
Carnival participation credit by joining one of the pre-Carnival Tours
