Project Information
-------------------
Project Author: Josh Brown <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Project Title: Be a Designer!

Project Begin & End Dates: 7/12/02 to 8/02/02

Project Summary:
This is a project for students interested in design and engineering. In this
project students will be asked to design a bridge and submit it to another
class
of students at a different location to construct and test the bridge design.
Each class will submit and receive a bridge design.
-------------------

Project Details
-------------------
Project Level: Basic

Curriculum Area: Science, Technology, Vocational Education

Technologies Used: Email, Web Based Discussion Forum

Project Sponsor: University of Illinois, CTER Graduate Program

Full Project Description:
Students from one school can design a bridge using the West Point Bridge
Designer, which is free through West Point Military Academy. Two classes will
develop designs then electronically swap ideas and build and test the other
classes design. There will be opportunities to chat between the classes, and
work together to create the best design. West Point also has an annual contest

using this software for high school students, hopefully some of the
collaborative designs could be submitted.

Objectives:
By the end of this activity the students will be able to:
1. Create a bridge design.
2. Analyze different structures.
3. Communicate design ideas.
4. Construct a bridge systems.
5. Use modern design software.

Reconceptualizing the Digital Divide
by Mark Warschauer
http://firstmonday.org/issues/issue7_7/warschauer/

The July 2002 issue of First Monday (volume 7, number 7)

Abstract
Reconceptualizing the Digital Divide by Mark Warschauer
This paper examines the concept of a digital divide by introducing
problematic examples of community technology projects and analyzing
models of technology access. It argues that the concept provides a poor
framework for either analysis or policy, and suggests an alternate concept of
technology for social inclusion. It then draws on the historical analogy
of literacy to further critique the notion of a divide and to examine
the resources necessary to promote access and social inclusion.

Although red tides have been reported in Florida since 1530, scientists
are still struggling to understand their cause, to predict their occurrence,
and to find a way to lessen their impact. Now, a group of scientists in
Florida, led by Ken Carder of the University of South Florida, is using
remote sensing data and offshore monitoring to find and track harmful algal
blooms as they form and spread.

NASA Science News for July 11, 2002

Summer is a great time to visit the beach and build sandcastles. It's pure
fun. It's also serious science. Read this story to learn about the
strange physics of sand, and to find out why NASA plans to carry some sand
onboard the space shuttle later this year.

A note about spaceship spotting: On June 11th we released a story "Watch out
for
Spaceships" (see http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2002/11jun_spaceship.htm)
describing how North Americans could see the International Space Station and
the
shuttle Endeavour flying over their backyards this week. The story contains a
list of suggested spotting times for selected US cities. Please note that such

predictions can change -- usually by a few minutes, but sometimes more -- as
the
date of the flyby approaches. Check your favorite tracking web site (several
are mentioned in the article) on the day of the flyby for the most precise
estimate. --Tony Phillips

"Tracking drought blends science and art. No single definition of
drought works for all circumstances, so people rely on drought indices
to detect and measure droughts. But no single index works under all
circumstances, either. That's why we need the Drought Monitor, a
synthesis of multiple indices, outlooks and news accounts, that
represents a consensus of federal and academic scientists. The product
will be refined over time as we find ways to make it better reflect the
needs of decision-makers and others who use the information."
