This Fall, the Annenberg/CPB Channel will present "Learning Math: Data
Analysis, Statistics, and Probability" and "Science in Focus: Energy," two
free video professional development offerings for elementary and middle
school teachers.

LEARNING MATH: DATA ANALYSIS, STATISTICS, AND PROBABILITY, the second of
five "Learning Math" courses, introduces statistics as a problem-solving
process. In this course, you can build your skills through investigations
of different ways to organize and represent data, and describe and analyze
variation in data. Through practical examples, you will come to understand
the concepts of association between two variables, probability, random
sampling, and estimation. The concluding case studies, divided into grade
bands for K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 teachers, show you how to apply what you have
learned in your own classroom.

"Learning Math: Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability" will be aired
on the Annenberg/CPB Channel on Tuesdays, September 17 - November 19.

SCIENCE IN FOCUS: ENERGY makes the point that understanding the concept of
energy is crucial to the comprehension of many ideas in physical science,
Earth and space science, and life science. The
video programs, print guide, and Web site of this workshop for elementary
school teachers provide a solid foundation, enabling you to distinguish
between the way "energy" is commonly understood and
its meaning in science. Examine energy's role in motion, machines, food,
the human body, and the universe as a whole. Learn how energy can be
converted from one form to another and transferred over space and time. And
explore the notion of "conservation of energy" - the idea that energy can
neither be created nor destroyed. Return to the classroom with a new focus
on the important concept of energy.

"Science in Focus: Energy" will be aired on the Annenberg/CPB Channel on
Wednesdays, September 18 - November 6.

The Annenberg/CPB Channel is simulcast on the Annenberg/CPB Web site.

> Preserving culture in a technological environment

I belong to the "Ice Age" generation. When I was a child there was no
refrigerator in our home. We had an icebox. We used to carry ice blocks in a
Utah cloth up to the third floor where we lived. My generation didn't grow up
with such developed technologies as today's youngsters. A telephone was a
rare thing and a telephone conversation was a happening.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution asked for a copy of the state's sexual
offender registry. We then bounced it against our address
standardization/correction/geocoding software and found that 17 percent of
the addresses were invalid.

Tracking of sex offenders dwindles; GBI blames shortage of staff, funding

By RHONDA COOK
Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer

As far as state officials can tell, 166 people with records as sex offenders
have vanished. There are probably many more.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, along with local sheriffs, is supposed
to track convicted sex offenders' whereabouts and inform the public through
an online registry. That way, Georgians can check to see if a sex offender
who's been released from prison or is on parole is living near them.

About 30 percent of the certified letters the GBI mails sex offenders
reminding them of their obligation to re-register their whereabouts are
returned by the post office as undeliverable, acting GBI Director Vernon
Keenan says. That usually means the offenders have moved and there is no
forwarding address, or they were simply not home when the mail carrier tried
to deliver the letters. It's left to authorities to determine which was the
case with the 1,200 to 1,800 letters that are returned each year, Keenan said.

The GBI has determined that 166 offenders cannot be found, said Keenan. The
number is expected to rise as the agency combs through about 3,000 more
returned letters.

The July 2002 edition of Peter's Digital Ready Reference Shelf is now
available on the Gale Group website. Peter Jacso is the most recent
inductee to the Internet Librarian Hall of Fame
(http://www.rlc.dcccd.edu/lrc/fame.htm)
and this month he reviews:

1) How Stuff Works - a funky and impressive resource for answering all
kinds of smart and silly ready-reference questions, and

2) Subway Navigator - sporting a particularly well designed inteface
and providing useful information which compensates for the sometimes
spotty coverage of subways in well over 100 cities.

These in-depth reviews are illustrated with dozens of screenshots and
provide a multi-linked virtual walk-through of the databases. They are
written by Peter Jacso, the 1998 recipient of the Louis Shores - Oryx
Press Award of the Reference and User Services Association for his
discerning database reviews. His column is available free of charge to all
