Subject: [DIG_REF] Live Medical Reference for the public on QandAcafe

This message has been cross posted to several lists. Please excuse the
duplication.

The Stanford Health Library now answers medical and health questions on the
QandAcafe web site, www.qandacafe.com on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:00
- 4:30pm PT. Howard Fuller, the librarian at the Stanford Health Library,
is piloting this medical reference service.

The Stanford Health Library also answers emailed reference questions, which
is a service that it has been offering for seven years through its web site
at healthlibrary.stanford.edu. The reference email address is now also on
the QandAcafe site.

Susan McGlamery, director of the 24/7 Live Reference Service of the
Metropolitan Cooperative Library System, and Mary Beth Train, QandAcafe
coordinator, have been working together to bring specialized information
services live via the Internet. Susan McGlamery has established both a
legal and a Spanish-language reference service for all libraries connected
with 24/7 services at www.247ref.org. There also are links to both those
services, as well as the medical reference service, on the "More Services"
page of QandAcafe at www.qandacafe.com.

The Stanford Health Library is a free and open-to-the-public consumer
health information library with the mission of providing
"scientifically-based medical information to help people make informed
decisions about their health and health care." Founded in 1989, it is a
community service of Stanford Hospital and Clinics, the Palo Alto Medical
Foundation and other organizations near Stanford University.

The QandAcafe serves those who live and work in 14 counties surrounding
greater bay regions of San Francisco, Monterey and Mendocino. Metropolitan
Cooperative Library Services 24/7 serves the greater Los Angeles and Orange
County areas. Both are collaborative ventures of public, academic, school,
and special libraries.

Coordinator, 408-294-7334, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: [WWWEDU] online privacy and school monitoring

Hi folks.

I am working on the chapter of my book related to online privacy related
to district monitoring of Internet use. I am interested in some insight
into how some folks are handling these issues on a day to day basis.
Here are some questions:

What and how do you tell your students and staff about their privacy
expectations when using the Internet on the district system? Are these
expectations different as they relate to web use and e-mail use? Are the
privacy expectations different depending related to age (eg. classroom
e-mail accounts for elementary students, private accounts for secondary students)?

How is student and staff usage monitored (by this I mean, after the
fact, not supervision)?

Who is authorized to conduct individual searches of Internet usage
records of students and staff?

What records are required if an individual search of Internet usage of
students or staff occurs?

Are there provisions in the collective bargaining agreements with staff
that address individual searches of their Internet files?

Do you provide parents with access to their child's Internet usage
records, if they request such access? Do you tell them they have a right
to such access?

Thanks in advance.

Nancy

The NEA just published an excellent guide and evaluation framework for
considering online high school courses.
