DALLAS SCHOOL DISTRICT SUED FOR BANNING RELIGIOUS EMAIL The American Center for Law and Justice, on behalf of LaDonna DeVorea, has sued a suburban Dallas school district over a policy banning employees from sending email containing religious messages. DeVore sent a message this spring through the district's email system about President Bush's proclamation for a national day of prayer. But district officials allegedly told her that the email was inappropriate and threatened to suspend her email privileges if she used the system again to send religious messages. http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/news/editorial/3782797.ht m Nancy Nancy Willard, M.S., J.D. Dillard [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, August 02, 2002 12:36 PM The crisis in the alleged fixing of judging outcomes in the figure skating competition in the recent Olympic Games at Salt Lake City may be the most serious and damaging scandal in Olympic competition history. Here are some news sources regarding the latest developments in this matter. Legal Document: Complaint Against Alleged Mobster Accused Of Trying To Fix Olympic Skating Event [PDF File] <http://news.findlaw.com/hdocs/docs/olympics/tokhtakhounov72202cmp.pdf> ------------------- Russian Accused of Olympics Fix By ANDREW DAMPF Associated Press Writer <http://news.findlaw.com/ap_stories/s/2090/ 8-1-2002/20020801074501_18.html> VENICE, Italy (AP) - A suspected Russian mobster might have contacted as many as six judges in trying to fix a pair of figure skating events at the Salt Lake City Olympics, Italian police said. An Italian organized-crime unit revealed details of their operation Thursday, a day after arresting suspect Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov in Venice on U.S. conspiracy charges. Tokhtakhounov is accused of scheming to persuade a French judge to vote for the Russian pairs team and a Russian judge to vote in turn for the French ice dancing team, according to a criminal complaint filed in Manhattan federal court. Both teams won gold. ----------------------- Mobster Possibly Phoned Skate Judges By ANDREW DAMPF Associated Press Writer <http://news.findlaw.com/ap_stories/s/2090/8-1-2002/ 20020801183023_10.html> VENICE, Italy (AP) - As many as six Olympic figure skating judges might have been contacted by a reputed Russian mobster charged with fixing two events at the Salt Lake City Games, Italian police said. An Italian organized-crime unit revealed details of the case Thursday, a day after arresting Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov in Venice on U.S. conspiracy charges. The Salt Lake judging scandal, the biggest in Olympics history, resulted in a duplicate set of gold medals being awarded to the Canadian team that finished second to the Russians. Tokhtakhounov is accused of scheming to get a French judge to vote for the Russian pairs team, and a Russian judge to vote in turn for the French ice dancing team, according to a criminal complaint filed in Manhattan federal court. Both teams won their events. ---------------------- Russian Implicated in Olympic Scandal Alleged Mobster Charged With Conspiring to Fix Skating Events By Amy Shipley Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, August 1, 2002; Page A01 <http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A28821-2002Jul31.html> According to a sealed complaint filed in federal court on July 22, Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov used his influence with Russian and French skating officials to guarantee that, in exchange for the vote of French judge Marie Reine Le Gougne for the Russian pairs team, the Russians would ensure that the French team won the gold medal in ice dancing. The arrest could shed light on lingering questions surrounding the controversy that arose at the Winter Games in February. After the pairs competition, Le Gougne admitted voting for the Russian team under pressure from French skating federation president Didier Gailhaguet. The ensuing flap resulted in duplicate gold medals being awarded to the Canadian pair, which had finished second ------------------- Mobster Charged in Olympic Scandal <http://www.salon.com/news/wire/2002/08/01/mobster/index.html> U.S. investigators said Wednesday that they had obtained recorded telephone conversations between Tokhtakhounov and a French ice dancer, in which the suspect brags about being able to influence the outcome of competitions. The U.S. complaint said wiretaps caught the defendant talking to a female ice dancer's mother. After the Olympics, the female ice dancer called Tokhtakhounov to discuss the outcome, the complaint said. It was unclear exactly when the suspect might be extradited to the United States, but the process can last more than a month and could be delayed by the judiciary's summer recess. Mainolfi said Italian authorities came upon the Olympic case by accident. They were investigating other activities involving the suspect when they came across the conversations. -------------------- We Deserved Our Gold, Say French Ice Dance Duo <http://news.findlaw.com/sports/s/20020801/ olympicsskatingfixingdancersdc.html> PARIS (Reuters) - Olympic ice dance champions Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat said Thursday they deserved the title they won at the Salt Lake City Games. The French duo issued a statement after the arrest on Wednesday of Uzbek-born Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov, 53, over an alleged plan to fix the pairs and ice dance competitions. Peizerat said: "Marina and I skated our hearts out at the Olympic Games and believe we were justly awarded with the gold medal. --------------------- Full Stories May Be Read at the URLs Under Each Article Citation and the URLs should be pasted as one line in your internet browser.
