Hello all,

August 14, 2002 is the 8th anniversary of the Arbor Heights School web
site.
It's still sitting on the same little spot of cyberspace it's had since
1994: http://www.halcyon.com/arborhts Still an active school site, it
was
one of the first on the web, it spawned the Earth Day Groceries Project,
and
it is home to the Random Thoughts of Louis Schmier. Stop by for a
visit, or
take a little historical tour:
http://www.halcyon.com/arborhts/history.html,
dedicated to the many teachers who keep their school web sites going on
their own time. - Mark

You might want to look at http://www.bitterlemons.org/

>From their About page:
"Bitterlemons.org is a website that presents Israeli and Palestinian
viewpoints on prominent issues of concern. It focuses on the
Palestinian-Israeli conflict and peace process, but other, related
regional issues are also discussed. It is produced, edited and partially
written by Ghassan Khatib, a Palestinian, and Yossi Alpher, an Israeli.
Its goal is to contribute to mutual understanding through the open
exchange of ideas. It aspires to impact the way Palestinians, Israelis
and others worldwide think about regional issues."

The teacher could use the contrasting POVs or compare how they percieve

Hi LM_Netters,

AASL's Knowledge Quest is working on an issue about using data:

*collaborating with math or science teachers to teach statistical info
*data-driven practice
*using data for decision-making with administrators
*integrating software programs which manipulate data into your
curriculum
*data collection - e.g. surveys, etc.

If you've got an example from your own work in a school, please e-mail
me
with your idea and perhaps we can turn it into an article for KQ.

Thanks!

Subject: PROJECTS: APEC 2002 Networked Collaborative Learning Project

We are initiating a networked collaborative learning project
under the auspices of the EDNET and APEC Cyber Education
Cooperation (ACEC) of APEC. The project is sponsored by
both Ministry of Education and LINC Digital Media Co., Ltd.
of Chinese Taipei.

The networked collaborative learning project is designed
specifically for students and teachers of k-12 schools
in APEC member economies. The project is composed of four
networked collaborative learning programs, which are
"A Day in Our Schools", "Our Advertisements", "Our Holidays",
and "What are Typhoons and Tornadoes?"

The project will start in the end of August and close in
the end of the year.

The primary objective of "A Day in Our Schools" is to
encourage students from different countries to realize
the differences of the culture and the educational systems
through the observation and description of their school lives.
And by doing so, they can also develop their affective senses
of comprehension and appreciation. The aim of "Our
Advertisements" is to encourage children to display the
culture of their ordinary life through the observation of
advertisements in the daily life. Thereupon, they can build
up the awareness of the "global village" through the joint
discussion of similarities and differences among nations.
The purpose of "Our Holidays" is to share different cultural
backgrounds and social customs or living styles with individual
countries through the Internet, and thus to enrich the sense
of awareness and appreciation on different races/nations.
As to "What are Typhoons and Tornadoes?" its goal is to let
students from different countries inquire into the significant
natural phenomenon in the natural science together, as well as
to increase their capacity of exploiting the Internet to solve
problems and being familiar with the new mode of the
group-collaborative learning.

The project will invite school students from APEC economies
to form teams and take part in the learning activity.
The team should consist of at least 10 and no more than 20 students
from the same class or school.

greatest national catastrophe in the post-Civil War era. At 4:07
on the chilly, wet afternoon of May 31, 1889, the inhabitants
Johnstown, Pennsylvania, heard a low rumble that grew to a "roar
like thunder." Some knew immediately what had happened: the South
Fork Dam, after a night of heavy rain, had broken. The break sent
a 36-foot wall of water rolling at 40 miles per hour toward
Johnstown, a town of 30,000 people. More than 2,200 people were
killed. (NPS,NRHP,TwHP)

"Teacher's Guide to Craters of the Moon" provides lesson ideas for
studying the geology, history, & ecology of this national park near
Arco, Idaho. A high school unit on "Managing Critical Resources at
Craters of the Moon" focuses on degradation of geologic features,
water & air quality, & the balance of life of lava. Craters of the
Moon National Park is one of the best examples of basaltic
volcanism in the world. (NPS)
http://www.nps.gov/crmo/intro.htm

"Valley Forge" looks at this famous campsite that marked a turning
point in the American Revolution. By the fall of 1777, General
Washington had suffered more defeats than victories. He sought a
winter campsite that would allow observation of the British army
without exposure to surprise attack. In December, he led 12,000
men into Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, for a 6-month encampment while
the British camped 20 miles away in Philadelphia. The winter was
severe. Nearly 2,000 American soldiers died of disease. But the
Continental Army learned discipline & organization here that,
coupled with French assistance on land & sea, helped turn the tide
of the war. (NPS)

"A Visual Sourcebook of Chinese Civilization" features 10 units on
Chinese history, culture, & society. Each unit organizes photos,
