The project is sponsored by both Ministry of Education and LINC Digital Media Co., Ltd. of Chinese Taipei. The networked collaborative learning project is designed specifically for students and teachers of k-12 schools in APEC member economies. The project is composed of four networked collaborative learning programs, which are "A Day in Our Schools", "Our Advertisements", "Our Holidays", and "What are Typhoons and Tornadoes?" The project will start in the end of August and close in the end of the year. The primary objective of "A Day in Our Schools" is to encourage students from different countries to realize the differences of the culture and the educational systems through the observation and description of their school lives. And by doing so, they can also develop their affective senses of comprehension and appreciation. The aim of "Our Advertisements" is to encourage children to display the culture of their ordinary life through the observation of advertisements in the daily life. Thereupon, they can build up the awareness of the "global village" through the joint discussion of similarities and differences among nations. The purpose of "Our Holidays" is to share different cultural backgrounds and social customs or living styles with individual countries through the Internet, and thus to enrich the sense of awareness and appreciation on different races/nations. As to "What are Typhoons and Tornadoes?" its goal is to let students from different countries inquire into the significant natural phenomenon in the natural science together, as well as to increase their capacity of exploiting the Internet to solve problems and being familiar with the new mode of the group-collaborative learning. The project will invite school students from APEC economies to form teams and take part in the learning activity. The team should consist of at least 10 and no more than 20 students from the same class or school. At 4:07 on the chilly, wet afternoon of May 31, 1889, the inhabitants Johnstown, Pennsylvania, heard a low rumble that grew to a "roar like thunder." Some knew immediately what had happened: the South Fork Dam, after a night of heavy rain, had broken. The break sent a 36-foot wall of water rolling at 40 miles per hour toward Johnstown, a town of 30,000 people. More than 2,200 people were killed. (NPS) http://www.nps.gov/crmo/intro.htm "Valley Forge" looks at this famous campsite that marked a turning point in the American Revolution. By the fall of 1777, General Washington had suffered more defeats than victories. He sought a winter campsite that would allow observation of the British army without exposure to surprise attack. In December, he led 12,000 men into Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, for a 6-month encampment while the British camped 20 miles away in Philadelphia. The winter was severe. Nearly 2,000 American soldiers died of disease. But the Continental Army learned discipline & organization here that, coupled with French assistance on land & sea, helped turn the tide of the war.
