In perhaps the most important session held yet in the Social Studies
forum, filmmaker Ken Burns will join us for an interactive session about
the re-airing of "The Civil War" on PBS. This special session will be
held at 7:30 p.m., September 12, in TAPPED IN (http://www.tappedin.org).

The session is open to all teachers and education professionals, but
especially middle school and high school social studies teachers.

Also joining us will be representatives from PBS and WETA, which worked
with Burns's Florentine Films to create the series in 1990. The film
will be re-released with enhanced video and audio features. A companion
web site will be launched on August 29, containing resources,
information about the episodes, and lesson plans. The web site is
located at http://www.pbs.org/civilwar.

Because we are expecting a large crowd for this session, we respectfully
are requiring the following:

People are invited to ask questions of Ken about the series and his
views on the war in advance by "paging" them to Michael Hutchison in
TAPPED IN. Instructions on doing this can be found on the main TAPPED
IN page (http://www.tappedin.org). Questions will be selected and
submitted to Ken before the session so he can prepare for answers.
Questions can be submitted in TAPPED IN 24 hours a day, seven days a
week.

In addition, everyone who wishes to participate in the live session MUST
be logged in to TAPPED IN by 7:30 p.m. Eastern (4:30 p.m. Pacific) time
SHARP for a short briefing on how to post questions and maintain proper
decorum in the session. Attendance in the briefing session is required
to help assure that things go as smoothly as possible for everyone.
Once Ken's session begins, no one will be admitted without special
permission.

Persons with questions or wanting more information are invited to e-mail
Michael Hutchison offlist.

Sincerely,

Michael Hutchison

Office Depot's 5% Back To Schools program applies to homeschools,
too! Another good reason to get those teacher IDs and take them with
you when you or your family or friends or church members, or whoever
else you can talk into doing this, buy any qualifying school (or
office) supplies through 9/30. See the information below and check
out the qualifying lists of supplies at your local Office Depot:

Here's the Office Depost web site for this project (very long URL so
copy and paste both lines):

Depot's 5% Back to Schools* program. With the help of our customers,
Office Depot has been able to give millions of dollars in school
supply credits back to thousands of schools.

Don't let your school be left out! Whether you're buying supplies for
the office or the coming school year, Office Depot will donate 5% of
your purchase back to the school of your choice. The more people you
get involved, the more your school will earn. Be sure to encourage
all teachers, students, and colleagues to participate.

Here's how it works:
The eligible shopping period is July 21st through September 30th
5% of qualifying* purchases will be credited toward the school of
your choice. Valid for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade
A 5% credit of the qualifying purchases will then be awarded to
schools that earn $10 or more in credits

School Supply List

Visit your local Office Depot for your school supply list. Find the
Office Depot nearest you with our handy store locator.

* Available at Office Depot store locations and online at
www.officedepot.com (US) or in Canada at www.officedepot.ca. 5% of
qualifying school supply purchases during the program period of
7/21/02-9/30/02 will be tallied under the name of each school
designated by our customers. Office Depot will honor up to $10
million in total credits to the designated schools that opt to
participate in this program. At the end of the program period, the
total credits tallied per school will be offered to that school for
its use toward the purchase of thousands of qualifying school
supplies. Credits go into effect once the offer is accepted and
expire on 3/31/03. Sorry, computers, associated technology, and
furniture items do not qualify. See your local Office Depot store for
a list of qualifying products. Credit offers will not be made to
schools with less than $10.00 in tallied credits. Unaccepted/declined
credit offers immediately expire and are void. Limited to Pre-K-12th
grade."

The JASON Project(tm)

The JASON Project is a multi-disciplinary program that sparks the
imagination of students and enhances the classroom experience. From
oceans to rain forests, from polar regions to volcanoes, the JASON
Project explores Planet Earth and exposes students to leading
scientists who work with them to examine its biological and
geological development.

 >From the depths of dark oceans to the heights of wet rain forests,
from icy Polar Regions to red-hot volcanoes, the JASON Project
travels the world, taking students and teachers on an exciting
educational adventure. The JASON Project brings adventure and the
thrill of discovery into the classroom, exploring the following
questions:

What are nature's dynamic systems?
How do these systems affect life?
What technologies do we use to study these systems and why?

The JASON Project began as the dream of Dr. Robert Ballard, the
scientist and oceanographer who discovered the wreck of the RMS
Titanic in 1986. Dr. Ballard believed that enabling students and
their teachers to do field work from the classroom was a powerful
concept. The JASON Project was born on the basis of this powerful
idea and has since grown into the world's premier real-time science
teaching and learning program.

"By taking advantage of cutting edge communications technology and
bringing science to life, the JASON Project is helping to
revolutionize the way science is taught. That is good news not only
for our students, but for our country."
Dr. Robert D. Ballard
