From: Art Wolinsky <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi Folks,

For the past four or five years, I've been a mentor in Barbara Sotos'
GeoPals program. The programs is designed to help foster communication
skills in 5th graders in Tucson, AZ. Barbara pairs each 5th grader with an
adult GeoPal in a carefully crafted program of casual correspondence and
specific weekly and bi-weekly assignments.

Barbara works tirelessly with the program and the payoff is the growth and
appreciation she and the mentors see in the students as the year
progresses. As you can imagine, this one-to-one pairing of students and
adults is a tough, time consuming process, but each year Barbara manages to
grow the program a little more and help more students.

This year she is a few mentors short of her goal. If you think you can
donate about an hour a week to help a 5th grader and reap the benefits of
knowing you made a difference, please drop her a line. I'm sure she will
fill you in with the details and you can then make a final decision about
participating.

Her address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tell her Art sent you. <grin>

Take care,
Art

Friends,

We have several projects that have already been developed but need
moderators this year to guide the students as they participate in these
projects. If you have any minutes to volunteer to Kidlink, please send me
a note. :-)

Regarding this topic of junk e-mail (spam), Ziff-Davis is running an
interesting article on spam: <http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1106-955842.html>

The article's catchy headline is that spam makes up 36% of all e-mail. My
own thought is that percentage is pretty high; my primary public e-mail
account catches probably about 25% spam. Still, it's a scary figure.

What's worse is the article's prediction that it's going to get worse. :-(

Hi,

I just wanted to pass along a note to all of you about new features at
<http://www.journaliststoolbox.com>

We've built a large section for people researching 9/11 anniversary stories,
as well as some original content: a first-person account on the WTC
collapses and a piece on how a mother helped her young sons deal with the
tragedy. The stories are available for publication free of charge, but you
must first contact Allison Salerno at <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

Also, the sale of the site is moving along. We have a few bids in and will
be accepting all bids until Sept. 30. Don't worry -- the site will keep
publishing.

By all means check out the site and spread the word to your colleagues.

Thank you,

Mike Reilley

Dyslexia can be overcome with early detection

Tom Cruise, Pablo Picasso, Albert Einstein rose above it

August 29, 2002 Posted: 3:48 PM EDT (1948 GMT)

(CNN) -- Davis King is like many other kids. He loves football, being
in the kitchen and avoiding books. It's not that Davis dislikes
reading: He has dyslexia, one of the most common learning disabilities today.

"It's a neurological disorder that affects the way a student's brain
processes info," according to Dr. Lisa Guy of the Marcus Institute in
Atlanta. "So it could have an impact on the way a student hears
information, the way they express themselves orally. It may have an
impact on the way they read, write or do math problems."

Just checked this out extensively for the first time -- it's very
impressive, particularly the section on ICT for Development:

--------------------------------

The Development Gateway [http://www.developmentgateway.org] is an
interactive portal for information and knowledge sharing on sustainable
development and poverty reduction. It offers users access to development
information, resources, and tools, providing a space to contribute knowledge
and share experiences. The Gateway helps users navigate the growing amount
of information available online, and empowers virtual communities of
learning to address key development issues. The Gateway offers a
comprehensive database of development projects, knowledge sharing on key
development topics, and much more.

Below are areas where the Development Gateway currently concentrates its
knowledge-sharing efforts [http://www.developmentgateway.org/all-topics].
You can browse the contents of topics that are of interest to you, read the
contributions of others, contribute resources, and become a member of a
topic community. The free membership allows you to receive updates, and to
participate fully in this part of the Gateway.
