Project Level: Basic

Curriculum Area: History and Social Studies, Language, Mathematics

Technologies Used: Email, Web Based Discussion Forum

Full Project Description:
Our project is entitled the VIPER (Very Important People Enjoy Reading) Club.
It
is an "Internet reading club" which will promote recreational reading among
participants and compare the reading habits of students around the world.
Students read at home and keep track of the minutes read each month. They
submit
their minutes to their homeroom teacher and the total minutes for the class are

divided by the number of students in the class to give a "per student average".

These are submitted to the web site and results from all participants can be
viewed as they are submitted

Classes are welcome to join in our project at any time.

Objectives:
To increase recreation reading time, to manage data and communicate with
students across the globe.

Project Title: Millenium the Travelling Orca Whale

Project Begin & End Dates: 10/01/02 to 5/15/03

Project Summary:
Fourth Grade Students at Northern Heights Elementary School in
Bellingham, Washington will again be sending Millenium,
a stuffed orca whale, to various classes around
the world. We hope you can join us in hosting him this, his fourth year of
travelling the globe.
-------------------

Project Details
-------------------
Project Level: Basic

Curriculum Area: History and Social Studies, Language, Science, Technology

Technologies Used: Email

Full Project Description:
The Pacific Northwest is blessed by many animals. The orca
whale is a spectacular resident of Puget Sound. Fourth graders
at Northern Heights Elementary School in Bellingham, Washington would like to,
once again,
share information about the orcas by sending a stuffed
orca who we are calling Millenium to participating classes around the
world.This
will be Millennium's fourth year for travelling. Millennium has circled the
globe twice visiting such far off destinations as New Zealand, Israel, France,
Ireland, and Australia.
Millenium will travel with a passport and an informational book
created by students. We will also include a video tape which we hope
classes will add to. Our hope is that Millenium will be able to visit
20 classes this year for one week at a time.
This project has been incredibly successful the past three years and we look
forward to another great school year. Please do not apply to be part of the
project unless you are willing to honor the one week maximum stay.
Unfortunately, in the past we have had several classes who kept him for up to
three weeks - this greatly impacts the project.

Objectives:
Participating students will learn about orca whales
and also other students, their communities
and culture. Millenium's web page will be updated
as we learn more about other classes via his
  travels. Students will correspond through
email and also videotape and postcards.

SEARCHING FOR A SUPERHERO: CAN PRINCIPALS DO IT ALL?

In education, few agree about remedies to cure ailing schools. But on one
point, almost everyone agrees: the principal is key to any kind of change.
But what makes a good school leader? The truly effective principal is the
first among equals, a team builder, and a leader of leaders who encourages
others to take responsibility for what happens in the school. According to
a new report from the Education Writers Association, some traits of a good
leader include: delegating leadership; emphasizes instruction and putting
children first; encourages continuous staff development; building
coalitions with staff, parents and the community; and evaluating data,
including test scores, absentee rates, and discipline records, to assess
strengths and weaknesses in the instructional program and make
improvements. According to researcher Penny Sebring, "Turning a school
around is a such big task -- no one can do it themselves." (PDF)

TEACHER PERFORMANCE MOST IMPORTANT PREDICTOR OF ACHIEVEMENT

A new Carnegie Challenge Paper, "Teaching as a Clinical Profession: A New
Challenge for Education," summarizes the challenges facing the teaching
profession and offers a conceptual answer -- treat teaching as a modern
clinical profession. Too often, according to the paper, school reformers
have put the cart before the horse by launching school reforms without
teaching reforms, as if reducing class sizes or raising student standards
were self-fulfilling improvements. They are not. Studies confirm that the
quality of teaching is the single most important factor influencing
student achievement. (PDF)

"2003 NSTA Science Teacher Awards"

Due to overwhelming interest, the National Science Teachers Association
(NSTA), the nation's largest science teacher organization, is extending
the deadline for its 2003 science teacher awards. The deadline for
entries is now Tuesday, October 15, 2002. NSTA offers a host of awards
that recognize and honor the nation's top science educators for their
dedication to and passion for the profession and for their innovative
classroom programs. In addition to recognition, the popular awards give
science teachers the opportunity to secure resources for classroom
equipment and materials or attend an NSTA convention. Just a few of the
awards include the NSTA Distinguished Informal Science Education Award.
This award recognizes an NSTA Member who is not a classroom teacher, and
who has contributed to informal science education, the DCAT "Making a
Difference" Award, for middle level teachers; and the NSTA Robert H.
Carleton Award, the highest honor an NSTA member can receive, this award
recognizes science educators for their lifelong contributions to and
leadership in science education.

It seems that no one really has a sound understanding of privacy as it
now relates to the Internet and the Web---for example, how it relates to
technology's ability to keep records of people who visit a given Web
site, to delve into our personal information, or to eavesdrop on us in
the workplace.

Have you seen the USGS Water Resources of the US? Realtime stream / river
flow for pretty much the entire United States. My father showed this to
me (he was a geologist before he retired, he thought this was amazing).
Especially out here in the West, where things have been really dry the
last few years, seeing current / historical flow levels is a real
eye-opener. This is great data for a science class (or even statistics or
just plain graphing).

MALAYSIA'S PENANG STATE UNVEILS K-ICT BLUEPRINT
The Malaysian state of Penang has published a "Knowledge-Information
Communications Technology Blueprint" (K-ICT) that sets the goal of
transforming the state into an "intelligent land" over the next several
years. Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon, who announced the plan on
Wednesday, stated that the blueprint would focus on connectivity, knowledge
worker development, e-economy, digital equity and electronic good
governance. "We will appeal to telecommunications companies to help in
ensuring Penang becomes a fully connected state by 2005." he explained. Koh
emphasized the blueprint's focus on e-government: "[The] entire state
government would be re-invented with its structure and mindset transformed
through a fully networked e-government that is client-focused, efficient and
transparent." Koh added that the state would establish CTCs known as
k-community centres in villages across the state.

STUDENTS CAN SOAR TO NEW HEIGHTS IN NASA'S STUDENT ROCKET
CONTEST

High school students from across the country will get a
chance to soar to new levels -- thanks to a partnership
between NASA and sponsors of the Team America Rocketry
Challenge.

The Team America Rocketry Challenge is a first-of-its-kind
national amateur rocket competition for high school students.
Co-sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association and the
National Association of Rocketry, the challenge is being held
in conjunction with the nationwide Centennial of Flight
celebration in 2003.

The new partnership will tie the Team America Challenge to
NASA's Student Launch Initiative. The Student Launch
Initiative is an educational activity designed to motivate
students toward careers in science, math and engineering,
while giving them a taste of practical, hands-on aerospace
work. Introduced in the fall of 2000, the program, based at
NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.,
inspires students to design, build and launch reusable
rockets and real science payloads.

"We are excited about the opportunity to join two nationally
recognized organizations and expand this opportunity for
using rocketry as a learning tool," said Art Stephenson,
Marshall Center Director. "The partnership will offer hands-
on experience and provide a learning forum for students and
teachers across the United States through building advanced
reusable rockets."

The joint venture will enable the top 10 teams in the
Rocketry Challenge competition to submit proposals to
participate in the 2003-2004 Student Launch Initiative at
Marshall. Up to three high school teams will be selected to
participate and be mentored by Marshall engineers and
scientists. With guidance from their mentors and teacher
representatives, each student team will design, build, test
and launch a reusable vehicle and payload aiming for an
altitude of 5,280 feet, or one mile.

After completing the project, the three teams will be
eligible to receive an invitation to attend Space Camp at the
U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville.

The Team America Rocketry Challenge will select winners from
the top 100 schools nationwide at a fly-off competition in
Northern Virginia May 10-11, 2003.

Initiative, visit:
