   *** [[[ WHY LEAVES CHANGE COLOUR ]]] ***

http://www.umext.maine.edu/onlinepubs/htmpubs/7078.htm

This is science-plus-art for elementary grades.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension publishes this
two-pager about the cause of colour changes in fall leaves.
With 1200 words at a Grade 6 reading level, it also gives
instructions for painting a leaf by starting with a
rubbing of its outline and veins, or a stamp pad, or a
photocopy (use light contrast setting) of the actual leaf.
A clever way to teach proper use of a copier!

University of Maine publishes a number of educational
bulletins and fact sheets online with no fee and no
advertising. Most pertain to its own adult education
program but some are gems for the classroom.

Thanks to principal Warren Cocking of School District 87
(Stikine) in Dease Lake, B.C. for this suggestion.

Here are some other money sites that could be helpful.

http://www.funbrain.com/cashreg/index.html Change Maker
Figure out how many of each bill or coin that you expect to get back
when you pay for something. For example, if something costs $3.75 and
you pay with a five dollar bill, you would expect back one quarter
and one dollar bill.
If you get the answer correct, the amount of change is added to your
piggy bank. If you get the answer wrong, the correct amount of change
is subtracted from your piggy bank. The more money you get in your
piggy bank, the harder the questions will get.

Why not make Virtual Tours for FREE! I am a pathetic programmer but I have
created a website which will allow anyone to create a virtual tour online.
The site is called 'Digital Saskatchewan' but it has over 2800 pictures and
videos from many countries and is constantly growing. You can use any image
from the collection in your tour and can create links to other websites.
Teachers can create tours for students or the students can create their own
tours. We are having problems accepting online submissions right now but
you can still view images and create tours.

The Consortium for School Networking wins EdNET HERO award

Industry organization honors CoSN's contribution to education

LOS ANGELES (September 24, 2002) - The Consortium for School Networking
(CoSN), the premier national education voice for effective use of
information technologies and the Internet to improve K-12 learning, today
announces winning the 2002 EdNET non-profit organization HERO award at the
EdNET annual conference in Los Angeles.

"We are extremely pleased to honor CoSN for its contributions to the growth
of education technology and the telecommunications industries," said Nelson
Heller, president and publisher of The Heller Reports, host of the EdNET
conference. "Through CoSN's vision, we have seen tremendous change in these
industries for the betterment of education."

The EdNET HERO award is given annually to one non-profit and one for-profit
organization in recognition of making the most significant positive impact
on education through educational technology and telecommunications.

"The past year has reminded us how important 'heroes' are in society," says
Keith R. Krueger, CoSN executive director. "They provide role models, lay
out visions and lead the way. We at CoSN are humbled to receive the EdNET
non-profit HERO award especially given that this is our 10th anniversary
year. We also want to assure the education technology community that the
best is yet to come!"

Jim Hirsch, CoSN board of directors' chair and associate superintendent for
technology in Plano ISD, Texas, concurs with Krueger's assessment. "Being
recognized as this year's awardee is especially gratifying as CoSN's mission
as an organization is to recognize heroes - the chief technology officers
who make a daily difference in the lives of our children and teachers
through the use of educational technology. This recognition gives us
additional incentive to provide exceptional leadership opportunities for
them."

About the Consortium for School Networking
CoSN is the preeminent national voice on the use of the Internet and
information technologies to improve K-12 learning. It played a leading role
in creation of the E-rate and other key national education technology
initiatives over the past decade. CoSN has engaged in programs for
education technology leaders from the school district, state and national
level to ensure that information technologies have a direct and positive
impact on student learning.

Taking Total Cost of Ownership to the Classroom, www.classroomtco.org CoSN's
definitive program for school districts outlining best practices for
building and operating information networks cost-efficiently, is now the
primary source of information for district information professionals and
widely regarded as CoSN's most effective program to date.

A second leadership initiative is the Safeguarding the Wired Schoolhouse
project www.safewiredschools.org, which focuses on Internet safety.

In addition, a major new initiative has been the development of the Council
of School District Chief Technology Officers (CTO).

CoSN also produces the annual K-12 School Networking Conference,
www.k12schoolnetworking.org, the leading education technology event for
school district and state decision-makers. The 2003 conference will be held
Feb. 25-28 in Arlington, Va.

Visit www.cosn.org or call 202-466-6296 to find out more about CoSN's
programs and activities that support leadership development to ensure that
information technology has a direct and positive impact on student learning
in elementary and secondary schools.

About the EdNET Industry Awards
The EdNET Industry Awards are the only educational technology awards that
honor companies and non-profit organizations that have made significant
contributions to either education or industry growth or which promise to
become significant players in the industry. Given annually since 1993, the
awards are coordinated by EdNET, The Educational Technology and
Telecommunications Markets Conference, which is sponsored by The Heller
Reports.

Individuals familiar with the educational technology and telecommunications
industry nominate both for-profit companies and non-profit organizations for
the awards. Each year EdNET (www.hellerreports.com) gathers a panel of
education industry experts who subject each nomination to a rigorous judging
process.

Co-sponsoring this awards program, with The Heller Reports, a QED company,
are Texas Instruments and Words & Numbers.

Announcing Contentbank.org's (http://www.contentbank.org) first Online
Exchange, "Spanish-Language Curricular Materials."

When: September 25 -- October 8, 2002

Where:
http://www.modernsignal.com/clients/production/contentbank/cfforums/index.cfm

* Do you work with Spanish-speaking clients?
* Are you looking for programs you can learn from and resources you can
use?
*  Have you created a Spanish-language curriculum?
* Do you know of great online resources available in Spanish?

The topic of our first message board Online Exchange is Spanish-Language
Curricular Materials. This topic was selected because on Contentbank.org, at
conferences, on listservs, and at community technology programs around the
country, we have heard that it is often a struggle for community technology
programs to find high-quality, affordable educational resources for
Spanish-speaking clients. At Contentbank.org we bring great resources
created by local organizations to a national audience.

Please take this opportunity to tell people about your good work and learn
from the work of others.

====================

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
Anyone can view the Online Exchange and download attached files. However, to
post your own messages you must "join" (by clicking on "join" in the upper
right-hand corner of the page). When you join you will be emailed a
temporary password (usually within a couple of minutes) that you can use to
access this and all future Online Exchanges.

WHAT IS AN "ONLINE EXCHANGE"?
We call our message board forums Online Exchanges. We will host them
regularly, and each one will focus on a different topic that our users have
told us is important to them. The Exchanges will give our users the
opportunity to exchange resources, ideas, curricula, and more.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE RESOURCES AFTER OCTOBER 8TH?
The resources will remain on Contentbank.org indefinitely. In addition, we
will incorporate the best resources into other areas of Contentbank.org.

WHAT IS CONTENTBANK.ORG?
Contentbank.org (www.contentbank.org) is a project of The Children's
Partnership with support from the Markle Foundation. It is a Web site
designed to spur the creation of needed Internet content for and by
low-income communities. The target audience for Contentbank.org is the staff
members who work with low-income or underserved individuals in community
technology programs. Contentbank.org has three major goals:

* To make quality content for underserved users easier to find, identify,
and use;
* To make it easier for community-based organizations and the individuals
they serve to create their own content; and
* To encourage the public and private sectors to develop useable content
for low-income and underserved Americans.

WHAT IS THE CHILDREN'S PARTNERSHIP?
The Children's Partnership (www.childrenspartnership.org) is a national,
nonprofit organization that undertakes research, analysis, and advocacy to
place the needs of America's nearly 70 million children and youth,
particularly the underserved, at the forefront of emerging policy debates.

MIT offers free access to its knowledge
======================
People will soon be given access to knowledge from one of the world's
foremost technology institutes for free over the internet. The
Massachusetts Institute of Technology's project OpenCourseWare (OCW)
aims to stop the trend of commercialising online education.

The first group of courses are set to be published on the internet on 30
September, including subjects such as anthropology, biology, chemistry
and computer science. Over the next 10 years, MIT will move all its
existing coursework on to the internet. There will be no online degrees
for sale, however. Instead, the institute will offer thousands of pages
of information, available to anyone around the globe at no cost, as well
as hours and hours of streaming video lectures, seminars and experiments.

MIT staff point out that if this initiative is successful, and other
institutions follow, it will put the net back on track towards its
original goal of sharing information and knowledge around the world,
rather than selling CDs and t-shirts.
