Internet use growing in Africa, but still lags, finds UN study
Slow to plug into the 'wired world', the African continent is now making
"relatively rapid" progress in using ICTs, says a new UN study. Still, the
digital divide is at its "most extreme" in Africa, where ICT is at a very
early stage of development, it warns.

ICTs encouraging transparency in governance, finds study
ICTs are helping governments become more transparent and accountable to
citizens, UNESCO has said, citing a recently released joint
(http://www.comnet.mt/unesco/Survey1999/Survey.htm>study) conducted with the
Commonwealth Network of Information Technology for Development. But the
15-nation study also found new technologies "posing a challenge to

As e-mails containing certain keywords have begun to bounce back to Chinese
senders, activists have realised that Chinese government capabilities to

China has second largest Internet population, but there's a long way to go
China now has 45 million Internet users, the second most in the world. But
this accounts for only 3.6 per cent of the vast population of 1.3 billion.
And almost half of them are students or professionals, and half the
country's Websites are based in its three richest cities, according to
official Web data collector CNNIC.

"Celebrate National Metric Week--October 6-12, 2002
Almost every country in the world bases its measurements on the
International System of Units (commonly called the metric system).
Although the United States is an exception to that rule--still using
inches, feet, and miles--many U.S. industries and businesses have
switched to the metric system in order to remain competitive in a
global market. National Metric Week offers Americans an opportunity
to focus on the importance and ease of the measurement system based
on 10s. This year, the week of October 612 (the 10th month of the
year and the week containing the 10th day) will be set aside to
celebrate the metric system.
