Although the United States is an exception to that rule--still using inches, feet, and miles--many U.S. industries and businesses have switched to the metric system in order to remain competitive in a global market. National Metric Week offers Americans an opportunity to focus on the importance and ease of the measurement system based on 10s. This year, the week of October 612 (the 10th month of the year and the week containing the 10th day) will be set aside to celebrate the metric system. Here are possible sources of information and ideas for lessons: U.S. Metric Association (USMA) can provide information and resources, as well as ideas, including suggestions for celebrating National Metric Week, available online at http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/ideas.htm.
