While continuing to support teachers in a child-friendly approach to teaching, through the remainder of 2002, a particular emphasis will be placed on issues related to Girls' Education. The cost to societies of ignoring the education of girls is great. Fortunately, the benefits to communities are also remarkable when girls' basic right to education is respected. An informative and inspiring interview describes how one teacher follows her calling to educate people throughout her region. Related articles from Teachers Talking and UNICEF encourage your further reading and active participation. - > - > Teachers Forum < - < - "Early Marriage and Girls' Education in Ethiopia" Tenagnework Anegagre, a third grade teacher at Shum Sheha Primary School in Ethiopia, describes how the age-old tradition of early marriage prevents girls from continuing their schooling. A number of complex and interrelated factors contribute to the low enrolment and high drop out rates of girls in Ethiopia. In much of the country there is a lack of adequate appreciation of the importance of girls' education on the part of parents and the community, particularly in rural areas where the majority of the Ethiopian population reside. Early marriage, which is a common phenomenon in much of the country, reinforce attitudes that decry the value and need to send girls to school. Married girls who would like to continue their schooling are often prevented from doing so. High adult illiteracy rates, with only one in four adults in rural areas able to read and write, contribute to perpetuating the limited awareness of community members to the importance of girls' education. As a result, the majority of girls in Ethiopia are deprived of their basic right to education. - > - > Explore Ideas < - < - There are many barriers to Girls' Education and they exist at many levels. Early marriage is one such barrier. For a more complete view of the obstacles young girls may face as they seek to complete a quality basic education, read Barriers to Girls' Education, Strategies and Interventions. This is a newly revised and expanded version of the earlier pamphlet Barriers to Girls' Education. - > - > Online Discussion < - < - Many people in the field of education work to enroll and keep girls in school. Perhaps you are involved in such an initiative. Please share your experiences or opinions on to this topic via our online discussion. You can join the discussion from the Teachers Talking entry page or go directly: http://www.unicef.org/voy/cgi-bin/zdisc.cgi?index_teacher - > - > Take Action < - < - Do girls and boys have equal rights to education? Do they have equal access? Read a tale of Jabarte and his sister, Amina and complete the activities with your students. This section, taken from the Wishbook, draws attention to the different lives and opportunities confronting children in some cultures. As always, please feel free to suggest new features or content that you think would be valuable to our community of educators.
