From: Ron Brunton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> While not a site, an excellent use of Excel (or other spreadsheet) is for graphing equations. Create a table of values by putting X values in say column 'A2:A52', incremented by some small amount. Fill a series of those values for a relatively large number of data points (50? 100?). Put the equation in B3 (e.g. =A2*A2) and copy it into the rest of column 'B' (B3:B52). Choose a scatter X-Y plot, joining the data points. It's a nice slick way of manipulating graphs. It requires more understanding of the mathematics than graphing calculators. Roots may be determined with whatever precision wished by 'zooming in' on the point(s) where the graph crosses the X-axis. HTH Ron ----- From: John Goldsmith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Craig, I'm not sure which grade levels you're working with or presenting to so hopefully this will be of some use. This summer I attended a conference at the Univ of Washington called, "The Future of Education" hosted by Thinkquest. The conference was outstanding for many reasons but the one aspect I really liked was the fact that no one was trying to "sell" me something. Instead, the presentations, workshops and booths were staffed for the most part by educational researchers who were working with leading edge technology and were only to willing to share their research and knowledge. One of the demo's that literally blew me away was the graphing calculator presentation. I'm not a math person and have little more then a nodding acquaintance with graphing calculators but I was literally blown away by the things you could do with one. Granted, the calculators being used were from Texas Instruments (and I have no idea other calculators have the same capabilities) plus I think the presenters also worked for TI. Nevertheless, the range of software programs, accessories, and uses was almost beyond belief. Maybe this is old hat to the senior math people in the audience but it certainly amazed me. Unfortunately, I can' find the pamphlet from the presentation but if you go to the Thinkquest Website you can at least read an overview of the session. http://www.thinkquestlive.org/handheld.html Best of luck. -- John Goldsmith, Fraser Valley Distance Education School 49520 Prairie Central Road, Chilliwack, B.C.
