Teachers

Dear friends of Hi-CE,http://hi-ce.eecs.umich.edu/
Thank you for your support and patience over the past year or more. The
"Palm Book" that we have been saying is just around the corner has
finally
rounded the corner!

Why the holdup? Our vision of a little book that we might publish
ourselves kept growing. This is the main reason our release was pushed
back. The good news? The book has more than three times the content as
our original version! It's professional, it's complete, and it's a blend
of everything from background, technical knowledge, management,
logistics,
reproducible resources--everything an educator needs when starting to
use
handhelds in education. The book also comes with a CD loaded with the
latest versions of Hi-CE software for Mac and PC.

To learn more about the book, or to get your own copy, please visit the
website of our publisher, ISTE (The International Society for Technology
in Education) at www.iste.org/bookstore. The book's final title is: Palm
Handheld Computers: A Complete Resource for Classroom Teachers

Complete Resource for Classroom Teachers
Michael Curtis, Bard Williams, Cathleen Norris, David O'Leary, &
Elliot Soloway

With demand for handhelds running high and classroom expertise in short
supply, this is your must-have new title from ISTE. The authors are
early
adopters with many years experience between them, working out how to
use,
manage, and integrate handhelds into standards-based K-12 curricula.
They've distilled this field knowledge into a practical, accessible
guide, complete with technology overview of Palms, lesson plans,
assessment resources, and tips and templates for managing student use.
Packaged with CD and a suite of freeware programs developed at the
University of Michigan's Center for Highly Interactive Computing in
Education.

Test

Dear Administrators:

Channing Bete Company, a leader in the field of educational materials
and
prevention science, is recruiting schools as part of a bullying
prevention
program efficacy trial. We are currently in need of diverse middle and
high schools to provide about 200 students to take three 20-minute
Internet
surveys in the school's computer lab over a two-year period.

A cash incentive in addition to two annual school reports on attitudes
and
behaviors related to respect and bullying will be provided to each
participating school.

If you would like to hear more about this opportunity, please send an
e-mail to Ellen Ravens-Seger at [EMAIL PROTECTED] as soon
as
possible.

Thank you!

Online help desks and telephone call centers are vital in the
telecommunications and internet driven economy and business stage of
today. But the telecommunications industry has also globalized the
business stage. Therefore players performing a business service or
marketing role and contacting a client or prospect or handling a client
call or email request for service or help may be in a country on the
other
side of the world from the person on the receiving end of the
communication.

Call-Center Workers Straddle Two Continents and Cultures
<http://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/100902_ss4.html>

More than 100,000 young men and women, aged between 20 and 23, work for
call centers across India, estimates the National Association of
Software
and Service Companies (Nasscom), an association of software and
IT-enabled
services companies. They sell everything from cars to travel packages;
they nudge tardy customers into paying their credit card bills; they
warn
customers about overdrafts and staff the helpdesks for shopping malls
and
offices all over the U.S.

Now this is an interesting story: man stalking and harassing porn sites.

ANTI-PORN ACTIVIST CONFESSES DEEDS TO FBI
Bryan Sullivan - the Internet stalker terrorizing the porn
business - has confessed his deeds to the FBI. Sullivan
swamped the inboxes of adult industry companies with bigoted
slurs and tales of murder and torture. An FBI special agent
said Sullivan clearly violated the law, but the bureau needs
the cooperation of federal prosecutors before agents can
arrest him.

There is an earlier story on the receipt of these messages noted at the
bottom of this newsstory.

I recall several years ago a techie guy told me there was a group of
hackers who called themselves "hackers against porn."

*** [[[ FRENCH AND GERMAN PROJECTS ONLINE ]]] ***

http://www.modernforeignlanguages.co.uk

Obviously, this is for French and German second-language
teachers, from beginner through senior secondary level.

The Modern Foreign Languages site in the U.K. provides
lesson plans, grammar practice, and project work.

"Lesson plans are grouped under specific topics or
areas of grammar, but they can be used as stand-alone
lessons. All plans include printable vocabulary and
grammar sheets, worksheets, classroom activities with
resources, and extra links to online exercises and
vocabulary games, grammar explanation and practice..."

I was intrigued by the "cover work" lesson plans.
New term to you? It refers to lessons which can be
administered for you by substitute teachers, classroom
volunteers, or other non-linguists who cover for you.

The site is supported by a modest amount of advertising.
I could not trace its ownership, but it appears to be
related to the many excellent educational Websites at
www.byteachers.org.uk , otherwise known as the
Association of Teachers' Websites.
