Subject: [INDIANA-EDUCATORS] Learning Page Community Center/chat

Hello, everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to invite you to join fellow educators and
Library of Congress staff in the new Learning Page Community Center
(http://memory.loc.gov/learn). Featured topic for this month is
"Immigration". You are invited to "speak up" in the Symposium, the
Learning Page web-based discussion, or join LOC staff and other
educators in live chats, offered through a collaboration with TAPPED IN
(http://www.tappedin.org).

The next TAPPED IN chat is slated for 8 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Pacific)
Thursday, Oct. 17. Topics to be discussed include the use of primary
resources to address issues including, "what happened to the Native
Americans as weaves of immigrants arrived from other nations?", "How
were the immigrants received by the current citizens of the nation?",
"How did US Government policies and programs affect immigrant patterns
and the assimilation of immigrant groups into the life of the nation?',
and "What impact did the cultural traditions of immigrants have on the
US?"

Please be sure to mark your calendar for the first and third Thursday of
each month to join us for live chats in TAPPED IN, or drop by the
Community Center to participate in the Symposium.

Persons with questions are welcome to e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] for
more information.

Sincerely,

Michael Hutchison

RESEARCH: SLOWER DOWNLOADS PROMPT GREATER REACTIONS

As cable companies and Internet access providers compete for customers
by
offering faster access to the World Wide Web, a new study shows slower
download speeds can prompt greater arousal and response than faster
ones.
The research by S. Shyam Sundar, associate professor of communications
at
Penn State, and Carson Wagner, assistant professor of advertising at the

University of Texas, appears in the current issue of Media Psychology.
In
three separate experiments, the experts measured the effects of download

speed on the skin conductance levels of participants exposed to slow- or

fast-loading versions of the same Web site. Those exposed to
slow-downloading pages were more active in their subsequent Web
browsing.
"Given that arousal is positively related to memory, sites that generate

greater physiological excitation are likely to be more memorable,"
Sundar
says. "Slow downloading can be effectively harnessed to improve audience

involvement in Web sites." For the full story, visit

Here's what's new on the University of Chicago Press website for October
2002:

WHAT'S RELIGION GOT TO DO WITH IT?
Bruce Lincoln finds remarkable symmetries in the rhetoric of George W.
Bush
and Osama bin Laden, as exhibited in their speeches following September
11th. It's an excerpt from his forthcoming _Holy Terrors: Thinking
About
Religion after September 11_ , in which he reassesses the place of
religion
in a global and conflicted world. Read his analysis:

"RONALD SEARLE IS A GENIUS."--GROUCHO MARX
You don't have to be a Marxist to appreciate the genius. In his ninth
decade, Searle still wields a wit as sharp as his pen. The pages
of _Ronald Searle in Le Monde_ are filled with his takes on political
chicanery and the foibles of power. View five cartoons from the book.
