The configure script is an absolute beast to try and untangle,
but I suspect that this is being included because it's (allegedly)
necessary for some particular feature.

The current development code includes a configure option
  '--without-elf' which can be used to explicitly omit this
library from the build environment.

Unfortunately, this is not currently included in any released
version, so you'd need to work with the latest CVS code.

Thanks - will take a look at the CVS. Right now I have a simple sed that takes it out in configure
