I'd recommend
echo "persistentDir /var/net-snmp/agent1" >
/usr/local/share/snmp/agent1/snmpd.conf
instead. Not sure why Robert's FAQ says differently. I think it shouldn't.
If it still doesn't work, run the agent(s) with "-Dread_config" and post
the output here.
