I agree this is needed...

It would probably involve adding a testing/progs directory (or
something) along with a Makefile, adding that to the build tree
(optionally on or off...  the option needs to be there though) and
then adding the progs directory to the path so that the test scripts
can access it.  Then adding a new test to use them is as simple as a
sh-wrapper (like we have currently) wrapped around the new prog.
