Unless the source really was broken, running the above command twice was
always enough. IIRC it still worked on CVS HEAD a couple of months ago.

Today the best answer seems to be:

make -j8 -k 2>&1 | tee -a makelog.0
make 2>&1 | tee -a makelog.1

To do in parallel as much as possible, and serialize the rest.
