Ok, it turned out that there were some symbols in the library (so) files which
are created when we compiled the NetSNMP package, however, if I use the "-g"
option in the "--with-cflags" configure option then a lot more symbols are
stored for me to use.

As far as I am aware, you would have to take explicit steps to
produce stripped libraries. The standard Net-SNMP build
process does not do this automatically.
Certainly the libraries in my build area all contain the
expected symbols.
