I've seen a lot of questions lately around some of the more complex aspects of implementing a MIB, where there seems to be a lack of understanding of some fundamental SNMP concepts. Might I politely recommend the book "Understanding SNMP MIBs" by David Perkins and Evan McGinnis (ISBN: 0-13-4377087-7); see http://tinyurl.com/2mcdwl (Amazon.com link).
This book thoroughly covers the principles behind SNMP v1 and v2. It was written before v3 was standardized, but the fundamentals really haven't changed much; afaict v3's principle (and very significant) contribution was security. If you want a solid grounding in SNMP basics, I strongly recommend this book. If you have to design your own MIB, I *really* recommend this book, as it will save you a lot of grief and heartache when you are force to maintain your MIB for years to come. -- Glenn McAllister <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> +1 416 348 1594 SOMA Networks, Inc. http://www.somanetworks.com/ +1 416 977 1414 Asking a writer what he thinks about criticism is like asking a lamppost what it feels about dogs. - John Osborne ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc.
