Sure - I certainly wasn't thinking in terms of the 5.6 release now.
But it's probably worth trying to get something basic into
the trunk code, as soon as possible after 5.6 is out.

Our *expectation* is that the change to configure *should* only affect
people that have tried to enable v6....

But remember that the purpose of the   "rcN(max) == final" requirement
was to protect against the introduction of accidental changes.
Going straight to final now means foregoing this protection.
   That may well be a risk worth taking, but it *is* a risk (however minimal).

But we can discuss this properly next week.
