Subject: Re: Which is the stable version of Net -SNMP?

When I mean stable version I refer to a release with less number of issues
which may require immediate change in code or less # of patches.

This is a debatable option. It really depends on what you want to do with the
net-snmp code - and that too if you have something VERY specific that you need
done. For the most part, it's advisable to just take the latest (ver 5.6) and
start working with that. I think we had the alpha version of 5.6.1 discussed a
few days ago, but that is likely to have bugs (or at least, won't be
recommended
on a production system!)

Also from one of the previous mail threads way back in 2008, I see Dave
recommending 5.4.2. 5.4.2 was not available in the page that you had sent me.

I'm not sure which mail you are referring to, so can't comment on that. Please
realize that net-snmp is an open source package. That means, somewhere in the
license file you'll find the text "WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ERRORS CAUSED
THROUGH USE OF THIS CODE". Or something similar (I don't remember the exact
words). The general idea, is that you're being given the source code and it's
YOUR responsibility to check through it and evaluate for yourself if you want
to
use it or not.

Admittedly, the source-code is HUGE. It's not an easy undertaking to go about
and evaluate each and every edge-case in it. It's for this reason we have these
mailing lists. For fellow developers (and non-developers) to ask questions and
(hopefully) get answers.

Myself, I'm more of a user of net-snmp, than a developer. Through compiles,
tweaks and (eventual) patches, I hope that someday, I'll be accepted as a
fellow
developer too. It's insightful, seeing the commentary the other devs talk about
- the reason why I'm on this list.

If it helps, I've migrated to using the 5.6 code-base for my purposes.
