This patch has now been applied to the trunk. The only aspect that I'm not entirely convinced about is the handling of command-line vs config file settings. I can see why the patch is written the way it is (and why this was probably necessary), but it doesn't feel quite right. And why it's needed here, but not for other config/command-line settings. But that's a discussion for another time....
