Found the problem. Unfortunately it's not a one-liner. I had to fundamentally change the way net-snmp interacted with picld. I found a way of starting right at the top of the btree and working my way down instead of trying to jump right to the sensors. I ended up taking out about 45 lines of code, losing a whole function and simplifying another.
