Hi net-snmp-users,
My apologies for dragging up what is no doubt a well trodden path. I have been asked by our client to get their SLES9/RHEL/Linux servers reporting to their Solarwinds Orion network monitoring software, there are issues monitoring CPU and/or Memory. I have spent time investigating this issue and found the same question frequently asked without satisfactory answers. Solarwinds support are particularly unhelpful on this subject (I have heard that during a phonecall they denied they claim compatibility with Linux).

In a nutshell is there a definitive answer/position on the compatibility between net-snmp (particularly the 5.1 series provided with SLES9) and Solarwinds Orion 7.8.2. An answer and any advice on achieving compatibility would be much appreciated. I provided below some more information gleaned during my investigation for those who are interested.

We have observed better compatibility with the latest net-snmp-5.1.3.1-0.6 SLES9 update (issued 20051205) than the previous SLES9 5.1 versions, no additional improvements were observed using net-snmp-5.2.1-5.2 from SUSE Pro 9.3.

My final course of action, should no answers be forthcoming, is to install and compile net-snmp 5.0.9 the version Solarwinds claim compatibility with.

If there is a answer my I suggest it is added to the FAQ.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Stephen Chaddock

Information:

According to the SLES maintenance advisories the snmp packages that are kept synchronised via updates are net-snmp, net-snmp-devel and perl-snmp (not perl-Net-SNMP).

The following is a list of net-snmp package versions provided by Novell for SLES9:

net-snmp-5.1-80.3 SLES9 original SLES9 release package
net-snmp-5.1-80.6 SLES9 update 20040730
net-snmp-5.1-80.11 SLES9 update 20041230 - provided with SLES9 SP1
net-snmp-5.1-80.16 SLES9 update 20050225
net-snmp-5.1-80.19 SLES9 update 20050719 - provided with SLES9 SP2
net-snmp-5.1-80.22 SLES9 update 20051017
net-snmp-5.1.3.1-0.6 SLES9 update 20051205 - current
net-snmp-<version>-<SLES9 version>

With the installation of the HP Proliant Support Packs (HP PSP) for SLES9, HP provide their own versions of the net-snmp packages with some extensions: net-snmp-cmaX, net-snmp-devel-cmaX.

net-snmp-cmaX-5.1-199 HP PSP 7.20 20050205
net-snmp-cmaX-5.1-220 HP PSP 7.30 20050504
<Missing or removed> HP PSP 7.40 20050909
net-snmp-cmaX-<version>-<HP version>

SUSE Pro 9.3 provides SLES9 binary compatible versions of net-snmp 5.2 (and nice SUSE source packages to recompile on SLES9 if you need to keep things clean and compatible).

net-snmp-5.2.1-5 SUSE Pro 9.3 release package
net-snmp-5.2.1-5.2 SUSE Pro 9.3 latest update

SUSE 10.0 and 10.1 appear to be the same packages but on latest build platforms.

Note: During testing the (deprecated) ssCpuIdle OID did not change from "99" on several systems when checked with snmpget/walk.
