./configure is creating empty makefiles for me.

Did this:
./configure --with-defaults 

Got this:

./configure[1855]: ==: A test command parameter is not valid.

But then,

make: *** No targets.  Stop.

Empty! Drats. Looks like all the Makefiles in the relevant subdirectories are 
empty too.
