This particular part of the source is only active in 5.3.x and later by
default, not in 5.2.x. Try Dave's suggestions and see yourself.

I compiled successfully v.5.3.1 on FC5.
I drop those values from 30 to 5.
After running it, it still refreshes interfaces values every 30 seconds.
