Hi, I'using net-snmp from a few months but it is the first time I post a message on this list, I hope someone can help me.
I have a doubt on the management of dynamic interfaces in ifTable, I created two subinterfaces on my eth0 using vconfig, typing vconfig add eth0 10 vconfig add eth0 11 I took a look at my ifTable and I found two new lines with index 4 (eth0.10) and 5 (eth0.11), then I removed the first one typing vconfig rem eth0.10 Then I created eth0.10 again and I found a difference in the ifTable I obtained, depending on the net-snmp version used. In version 5.1.3.1 and 5.2.1.2 eth0.10 was removed from ifTable and its index was assigned to eth0.11 that appeared briefly twice. When eth0.10 is created again, it appears in the ifTable below eth0.11. In other words, if eth0.10 is present in the ifTable with index 4 and eth0.11 is present with index 5, when eth0.10 is removed index 4 is assigned to eth0.11 and when eth0.10 is created again eth0.10 appears with index 5. In version 5.3.0.1, 5.3.1 and 5.4.pre3 something different happens (below you'll find the snapshots from ifTable). When eth0.10 is removed, it still appears in the ifTable with ifAdminStatus and ifOperStatus down (when you create they are up) When you create eth0.10 again, it appears below eth0.11, with ifAdminStatus and ifOperStatus up, so you have two instances of eth0.10 present in ifTable. In other words if eth0.10 is present in the ifTable with index 4 and eth0.11 with index 5, a new row related to eth0.10 is added with index 6. If you restart the agent, not the PC, in the ifTable you will find eth0.11 with index 5, eth0.10 with index 6 and a hole at index 4 corresponding to the index assigned to eth0.10 the first time you created. This behavior could be related to an attempt to save index 4 a new istance of eth0.10 but it seems that something goes wrong. During all my tests I ran "ifconfig -a" and I found the eth0.10 and eth0.11 were correctly managed according to the "vconfig" commands. I'm using a PC with Mandriva 2006 (kernel 2.6.12.12), but I saw the same behavior on an embedded machine with power pc and Montavista kernel 2.4.20. Hope I've been clear enough, thank you in advance.
