OK - what about

     snmpgetnext  .... sysORUpTime.8

?
My suspicion is that this will return endOfMib/noSuchName....

That should be OK.
Two options spring to mind:
    a)  The agent doesn't include support for the HostResources MIB
    b)  It's not reading the snmpd.conf file that you expect.

Try running

     snmpd -Lo -f -Dread-config ,,,,

and check that it's reading the config settings correctly.
