hi joao,

the net-snmp agent supports the LM-SENSORS MIB ... but as far as i can
tell, only under Solaris (plse correct me if i'm wrong). [on the one
box where i have implemented it, the only items i could see were values
for voltage, temperature, and fan speed ... and i haven't figured out
what 'normal' is ... thus, i haven't figured out what thresholds to set]

under Windows, WTCS offers a free SNMP sub-agent for monitoring a range
of popular hardware (supporting their INFORMANT-MBM MIB) ... and a
commercial version (WMI-HW Agent) with wider and deeper support
(www.snmp-informant.com), covering things like cpu temperature and fan
speed. [the hardware i own doesn't fall under their support list, so i
don't have any experience using this]

but after that, i know of nothing 'generic', i.e. good across multiple
hardware platforms. various hardware manufacturers offer their own SNMP
sub-agents (Dell is the only one i've implemented, shipped under the
'OpenManage' moniker) which give access to hardware-specific information
... but those implement enterprise MIBs, i.e. applicable only to that
vendors' gear

[i vaguely imagine that the IPMI effort might end up delivering a
generic SNMP interface to hardware-specific information. but i'm making
a wild guess here -- i don't know squat about IPMI. i'm hoping that
someone who is better informed than i am will speak up at this point]

thx
