The 5.0.9 release is fairly old by now, and is no longer being maintained. It's probably worth trying with one of the more recent versions (preferably v5.4), and see whether that works for you. There have been a number of OS/X blitzes over the last couple of years, so it's quite possible that the problems you are experiencing have since been fixed.
