Well having got a bit sick of the errors, I persevered a bit more with the script. Deleting .M2C-UPDATE-MERGE-FAILED in the root of the build tree (and all the .directories mib2c-update creates) /appears/ to have resolved my problem. Whether it was the correct thing to do or not (I suspect not) I don't know, but I'm happy. For the moment. I wouldn't advise anyone coming across this thread in the future to just blithely do the same based on this post.
