This rings a bell. Back then, official patch 1420758 fixed a similar problem in 5.3 for snmptrapd: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1420758&group_id=12694&atid=456380 I'd strongly suggest upgrading to a current version (5.4.1, preferably).
