I'm lost on why each customer would want to rename the service, but
I'll take it on faith that you have a good reason, even if that reason is "it
helps loosen their wallets".
However, if you are customizing a large number of open source packages,
then you should certainly consider implementing a framework to do the package
customization for you, which reduces the key problems to maintenance and
updating, which the framework should be designed to alleviate, and the
associated testing required to synchronize all those packages, which is a
problem you face already.

Crazy? No. French? Probably. ;-)
Need?! How you say, "Bon bas."? Most operations over here would
prefer to see the "net-snmp" daemon, as customers know the name and have
confidence in it. So I don't think it gets changed often. A key part of the
problem here is the lack of a configuration script on Windows that could be
used to change the service names before compile, so it would be non-trivial to
have a generalized solution.
