There is no such thing as "the way to go".
Any more than there is One Correct Programming Language.

We provide various alternatives for extending the agent - all of which
would perform perfectly adequately.  It's up to you to decide what
you personally are most comfortable working with.

Speaking for myself, I would tend to think in terms of writing
a C code module, unless there are compelling reasons to do
otherwise.   That's probably the most stable extension mechanism,
if only because it's seen the most use.  (And it's the one I'm
most familiar with).

  But if you feel that embedded perl would work for you, then fine.
There's no reason not to go that route.
