Hi!

I think you need to explain a little more in detail where this timeout
occurs. What SNMP manager do you use? If you just perform standard
queries from the command line, you can use the following options to
tweak the timeout:

        -r retries
Specifies the number of retries to be used in the
requests. The default is 5.

        -t timeout
Specifies the timeout in seconds between retries. The
default is 1.

Example:

snmpwalk -t 10 -r 2 -v 2c -c public 123.45.67.89

In your case, how long does it take for the agent to deliver a
response? You need -t to be at least that high. -r can be 1 or even 0 if
you don't want to wait for a bunch of retries.

Interestingly, this actually is premitted:

snmpwalk -t 0 -r 0 -v 2c -c public 123.45.67.89

It does, however, rarely give any response since the timeout is 0. In
many cases where your network and equipment with SNMP agents are
reliable, you can set -r 1 and -t 1 to allow one retry and one second
timeout or even -r 0 -t 1 if you want no retries. -t 0.1 only results in
0 seconds timeout, not 0.1 secs (in the 5.4.1 version I use on Linux
anyway).

Back to your question:

Since you explicitly describe an SNMP Manager, I assume you mean
something like Nagios/Nagbot, SNMPd or OpenView, or whatever application
you use for keeping a close eye on your network. In that case, the only
way would be to set the timeout in that application (all of the above
can do that) to a value higher than your response time.

If you need more help, please describe in more detail and I'm sure
you'll get the help you need.

/Fredrik
