RHEL 7 packages 5.7.2, I am using 5.7.3 which is noted as a "long term
support"

Usually with x.x.x versioning the third number indicates a patch release
and is *usually* API/ABI compatible with other releases that share same
first two numbers.

The second number usually indicates a minor release and is *usually* not
ABI compatible with releases that have a different first and second
number, but *often* (not always) is API compatible with other releases
that have same first number.

The first number is the major release.

So 5.4.5 would be the fifth patch release in the 5.4 branch while 2.7.3
is the third patch release in the 5.7 branch.

That is how 5.4.5 can have a newer timestamp that 5.7.3

I don't know for sure that Net-SNMP follows that scheme, but I assume it
does.

Sourceforge versions I never found to be reliable, it is usually best to
go by what the homepage of the project says that is not SF generated.

http://www.net-snmp.org/download.html

It says 5.7.3 is a current "LTS" release and 5.4.4 is the other "LTS"
release, which I *guessing* should only be used if 5.7.x breaks your
application.

When LTS releases exist, non LTS releases I believe are *usually* not
intended for production use.

So if I were confused about versions, I would use 5.7.3 unless I had an
older application that needed older major/minor version - and then I
would use 5.4.4 - *maybe* using 5.4.5 if it includes a bug fix I need.

These are just my impressions, and why I personally went with 5.7.3 - I
am not a Net-SNMP developer.
