If I'm not mistaken, Retrospect has an option to set the backup time of files it backs 
up.  It does not need to do this to perform incrementals (since the times are in the 
snapshots).  You might want to make sure it is not trying to do that (which perhaps is 
not supported in netatalk? or is setting the mod time instead of the backup time?).
