The problem, however, is not related to fonts: as one user (me), I have no
problem copying the same block of files to the user's desktop... while
logged in as another user (the machine owner), I get the "too many files
open" error.  No, this doesn't have to do with root privs either, as I
tried with another user account as well and got the same ok results as
with my account.

Any other ideas?
