I'm afraid it doesn't work. This tie it's happening as soon as I 
restarted the Mac and logged onto the netatalk server. I downloaded 
asun-pre37b while I was at it and applied the above changes to that.

I'm running a 2.2.12-20 kernel though - should I update it? What's 
the consensus on the latest stable kernel?
