I love The Endless Forest!

Thumbs up for accessible non-facetime non-VR online spaces like
gather.town; Calla is another interesting one which uses spatial audio
and a 2D map and is open source.
Bit off topic (though on list), but I can't help also mention the
beautiful /The Endless Forest/ by Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn of
Tale of Tales (who are probably lurking on NB!). Seems particularly
apt given the forest analogy. After a kickstarter a few years ago
they've been rewriting it on a new engine, now up to v3.4
/"//*The Endless Forest* is a multiplayer online game and social
screensaver, a virtual place where you can play with your friends.
When your computer goes to sleep you appear as a deer in this magical
place. There are no goals to achieve or rules to follow. Just run
through the forest and see what happens."/
Like /Journey/, TEF has no means of text or audio communication. Just
a silent contemplative space with some avatar gestures and movement
around the forest. Magical.

we are using gather.town and ohyay as well as zoom for the
Bodies:On:Live festival next week, which suzon posted about earlier
today. both of these platforms are quite easy to use, not VR or 3D so
no special equipment required, & they allow various other things like
avatars as well as audio-video.
and of course we're using UpStage as well - sneak previews of the new
platform that will be launched in october
(https://onlinefestival.themagdalenaproject.org/works-in-progress/).
UpStage is a cyberformance venue rather than a social meeting space,
but lots of fun meetings happen there too. you can give your face a
rest or make it appear in the floating shape of your choice ...

Hiya,
Last week we heard from approximately 40 people (including a number
of private emails).
I just send a fresh renewal message and will do this for the next 2
weekends.
It's fascinating to learn more about the lives, thought and work
being done by old comrades, and list lurkers and to hear about how
they relate to this social space and the work of dedicated
contributors :)
I'd really enjoy meeting in a VR setting Mez - nice call! I agree
with Alan and Paul that it would make sense to choose a place where
people can join with either monitors or goggles.
I am late to the "VR party" but recently started playing with
VRChat (a highly programmable VR space) with friend and collaborator
Cade Diehm (of the Para-real series <https://stream.undersco.re/ >).
I hear you Paul in your desire to see people's faces and at the same
time one of the things I really enjoy about VR, after a pandemic
year in jitsi/zoom/teams is the freedom to give my face a rest. Also
the ability to escape the world of heads floating in rectangles to
play with the virtual physics of social space.
Look forward to seeing what happens :)
Warmly
Ruth
