Thanks. It's an Asus eee pc 701, pretty much the first, with the original linux os; I did do some reconfiguring of course. I was able to get Audacity to run - it had to be compiled (unlike Blender). I recorded with the internal mic through Audacity - the reason I've had to do this, is that I'm at my father's house, out of NYC. The recording seems pretty lo-fi to me; the modification in the .wav file is created by using noise reduction where noise reduction shouldn't be used. The .ogg file is more what the original quality of sound is like - but .ogg isn't as universal of course. THe files are very different. I find Audacity kind of a mess to use, but I like more standard editors where I have easy control; I generally use CoolEdit - which is also a lot faster by the way.
I did raise the memory on the Asus to 1 gigabyte and added a flash card of 4 gigabytes, but it's pretty limited. On the other hand, I can type really fast on it, and it's the size of a paperback (with a 7" screen) which I really like. And since I run stuff from the command line, it does run a bit lean.
