Art, Criticism and the Forces of Globalisation:
The Artist as Critic / The Critic as Artist

This conference, organized jointly by Winchester School of Art, Tate 
Liverpool and the Archives of Art Criticism at the University of Rennes, 
seeks to investigate the historical and contemporary relations of art 
production and critical writing in the era of globalisation.

The conference is organized on the occasion of the Liverpool Biennial, 
which is focused on the global theme of The Unexpected Guest.The 
Biennial’s focus on hospitality and migrations are key to the forces of 
globalization and critical to this conference.

Day 4 (14 September) will be held at Tate Liverpool and is open to the 
general public as well as conference delegates.

Issues of art criticism and art practice will be explored in this day 
event entitled ‘Artist as Critic/ Critic as Artist’. Congruent with 
holding the last day of our conference at Tate Liverpool, a globally 
successful venue for modern and contemporary art and its critical 
understanding, this session includes papers by art critics talking about 
their practice and critical writing on art.
