The importance of GIFs is not that they are a material, much like HTTP they are a standard that has survived since 1989 (94 for HTTP) and as such, signal a low level of ephemerality. Therefore, as a medium, GIF is far more ³durable² and likely to be supported in the future, giving the standard the possibility for collectible art (therefore the money spoken of).
Materiality - if Firefox, Safari, and Chrome stopped supporting the format, postinternet artists would be in a paroxysm. Let¹s not confuse or kid ourselves.
