Still poking at this. I booted in single-user mode. That works. I did `mount -a` and then tried to change root's password. It won't. It takes new one and confirmation and then says: Couldn't generate salt. Unable to change auth token: Error in service module. Google gives nothing useful for this, but it certainly looks like others have had similar issues. I tried `vipw`... vi: warning: TERM is not set vi: unknown: unknown terminal type vipw: /usr/bin/vi: Undefined error: 0 vipw: /etc/master.passwd: unchanged So, I can't run vi.
